Our story
Guntur recipes, Hyderabad training, London logistics – and a founding couple who still taste every avakaya batch themselves.
How it started
Lakshmi Annavarapu grew up in Guntur, in a house where the gongura pachadi was ground on a stone and the avakaya jars were labelled by year like wine. Ravi grew up in Hyderabad, where his parents ran a small function-hall catering house near Begumpet through the eighties and nineties – he spent his school holidays counting laddus into boxes and learning why the biryani handi is never opened early.
They moved to London in 2008. In 2012, a friend’s gruhapravesham needed feeding – sixty guests, a Wembley church hall, a kitchen with two working rings. Lakshmi cooked, Ravi ran service, and by the end of the afternoon three other families had asked for their number. Saffron Sky Events started that evening, at the kitchen table, with a name chosen because the sky over both their cities turns the same colour at dusk.
The first 500-guest pelli came in 2015, at a hall in Harrow, with both of Lakshmi’s sisters flown in to help roll laddus. The Wembley kitchen followed in 2017 – a proper unit on Atlip Road with separate veg and non-veg lines, because that promise was easier to keep with two physical kitchens than with two sets of good intentions.
In 2018 Ravi’s cousin Suresh opened the Jubilee Hills office in Hyderabad. It began as a sourcing operation – pootharekulu from Atreyapuram, silks and brassware for décor – and grew into a full planning desk for NRI families arranging London events from India, and Hyderabad weddings from London.
Twelve hundred events later, the rule has not changed: if we wouldn’t serve it at our own family’s function, it doesn’t leave the kitchen. Lakshmi still hosts every tasting. Ravi still walks every venue. And the avakaya is still made to her grandmother’s proportions, which she will not be sharing.
The people
No account managers, no call centres. These are the people who answer the phone, host your tasting and stand at the back of your wedding making sure.
Guntur-born keeper of the recipes. Hosts every tasting personally and can tell which sister ground the chutney. Speaks Telugu, Hindi and English – bring your grandmother.
Grew up in his parents’ Hyderabad catering house. Walks every venue before we quote, and has never once been surprised by a fuse board.
Twenty years of function-hall cooking in Hyderabad before London. Owns the biryani, the gongura mamsam and the strict separation of the two kitchen lines.
The calm voice on the run-sheet. If she did your tasting, she is at your wedding – from mangalasnanam to the last paan, two steps ahead of everything.
Runs the Jubilee Hills desk – venue and vendor coordination across Telangana and Andhra, pootharekulu sourcing, and rupee quotes in your time zone.
Master of the six-foot tawa. Insists on ghee from one particular dairy and will not discuss it. His midnight mirchi bajji batch has a following.
What we hold to
Sentiment doesn’t feed six hundred people on time. Spreadsheets don’t make a bhojanam taste of home. You need both, held equally tightly.
The correct order of the leaf. Prasadam to the priest’s word. Sweets from the towns that invented them. If a ritual has a right way, that is the way we do it – and we ask your elders when we’re not sure, because someone always knows.
Named contacts, written venue agreements, one itemised quote, crew on site four hours early. Every promise we make is on paper before your deposit – and the run-sheet is shared with you, not kept from you.
Elders served first and never rushed. The coach driver fed. The teenager’s chaat corner taken as seriously as the VIP table. We were raised right, and it shows in how our crew moves through a room.
Where we serve
Our cooking happens in Wembley. Our recipes, our pootharekulu and half our team come from Andhra and Telangana.
Full catering and planning anywhere inside the M25 at no travel charge. Beyond that we regularly serve the towns below – travel is quoted per event, usually £150–£350.
Planning a wedding at home while you live in the UK? Our Hyderabad team handles venues, caterers and vendors there, with one point of contact in your time zone – and ₹ quotes as standard. We also source Atreyapuram pootharekulu and event silks direct.
